Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Farmhouse Sink

Things you will need:

  • Safety Glasses
  • Measuring Tape
  • Wooden Braces
  • Farming Square
  • Drill
  • Level
  • Hacksaw
  • Support Frames
  • Pencil
  • Silicone Sealant

Step One: Choosing the Right Sink

Farmhouse sinks often run out of stock, meaning you need to order them months ahead of your installation period. Before purchasing, there are several things you need to check to make sure it is suitable for your kitchen.

While choosing the sink, firstly look into all the materials. Research on their benefits and drawbacks for identifying what is suitable for your kitchen and will require less effort for maintenance. Remember that this will also affect your installation process. Undermount installation, flush-mount installation, and built-up installation are the fitting options you will be presented with.

Up next, you need to pick a suitable dimension for your sink. This should be based on two factors: the amount of space you can provide in your kitchen for the sink and the weight that your cabinets can hold up. Anything that is too big or too small will seem out of place and ruin the look of your interior. Similarly, if your sink is too heavy and cannot be held up by the cabinet, it is very likely to break down.

Tip: If you have a base cabinet with your old sink installed, simply look for a sink in that dimension to make work easier for you.

Step Two: Getting the Cabinet Area Ready

In case the support frames of your old cabinet are not enough to carry the weighty farmhouse sinks, install new support frames. Initiate by cutting off the water supply using the valves present underneath your old sink. Disconnect the water pipes afterward and turn on the tap to let any remaining water out.

Once this is done, remove all the cabinet doors, drawers, and other parts. One by one, unscrew all the pieces and keep them aside.

Step Three: Building a New Support Frame

With your sink’s dimensions known, you can now work on building a support frame for the sink. Choose a material that can support the sink’s weight.

Use a pencil, level, and your measuring tape to make the necessary marking on the wall and the wooden braces. You can use a template for the sink installation to identify the structure. Once you have double and triple-checked all the marks, you can go ahead and cut out the pieces for your support frame and wooden braces.

Since your support frame is ready, drill in holes into the wall and start screwing the pieces in. Be slow and patient to avoid making holes in the wrong places.

Step Four: Installing Your Farmhouse Sink

You can now start positioning your farmhouse sink onto the newly built structure. Use levels to get it straightened and when you are sure it is perfectly lined up with your markings, leave it be and connect the drain.

Now, using some plumber’s putty and silicone sealant, make sure your sink’s drain and strainer are firmly stuck onto the position. You should also connect it properly to the plumbing system to ensure a smooth water flow.

Step Five: Attaching the Countertop

In case you intend to use your old countertop, simply make sure the cut-out matches the dimensions of your sink. Then, put it into position and paste all the edges with your silicone sealant.

If you wish to install a new countertop, start by choosing the material (Tip: Try to match it with your sink material to get a stunning look). You should then hire a professional to cut the material out properly and fixate it on top using sealants.

Step Six: Assembling the Cabinet

Since the sink has been placed in its designated position, you can now focus on getting your cabinet parts together. Gather all the parts and screws and hinge them onto their original spots.

You can also use pieces of wood to build yourself a new cabinet. Use the level and measuring tape to create the correct shape and make markings with chalk or pencil. Once the measurements are ready, start cutting the pieces and drill through them to attach using screws.

The farmhouse sink has now been installed! Cheers to getting the job done!
